I am connecting to a HISP and they are asking if we support SMIME. Does QIE support a SMIME connection via SMTP to a HISP?

QIE does not have SMIME support in the roadmap at this time. The hisp you are using should support XDR or edge services for connectivity so you can use the ProvideAndRegister IHE profile. If you have concerns please contact qvera support.

QIE does not support SMIME connections to HISPs. QIE does support XDR connections to HISPs. Please read the following to understand the difference.

The existing Direct project specifications use SMTP as the back bone protocol between HISP’s and additionally define specifications to transform from IHE XDR and IHE XDM profiles to Internet Format Messages used by SMTP and vice versa. In addition to the above specifications vendors’ systems are using a variety of edge protocols for communication between the Edge System (in this case QIE) and the HISP. According to the Implementation Guide for Direct Edge Protocols a HISP SHOULD support the following edge protocols:

1. IHE XDR profile for Limited Metadata Document Sources

2. SMTP

QIE has full support for connecting to a HISP using the IHE XDR protocol but has not implemented standard support for connecting to a HISP using SMTP (with SMIME).
