When I create a package inside of QIE, I have a button to set an "Author License".  What is it, why do I need one, and how do I use it?

Packages are used to lock or protect intellectual property when designing interface solutions inside of QIE.  To lock a package, you are required to assign a password to the package.  The package password is used to unlock and view or edit the package as needed.  This works well unless the password is lost/forgotten.  To make sure that a developer of a package is never locked out of the package because of a lost or forgotten password, any QIE license can be used for an Author License.

When a QIE license is linked as an Author License, and that same QIE license is installed on the server with the package, then any QIE user marked as an administrator will be able to unlock the package instead of using the package password.  This way, if a developer of a package leaves the organization or the password is lost or forgotten, the QIE administrator will still be able to manage the package, and if needed change the package password.

Once a package has been developed and the developer is ready to distribute the package to their own customers, they must link a QIE license to the package as the Author License.

After a package has a QIE license linked as an Author License and that QIE license is not installed on the same server as the package (think package being installed on a customers server), then the only way to unlock the package is to use the package password.

Note: If for any reason it is preferred to not use an existing QIE license as the Author License, please contact Qvera support for a dedicated Author License.
