Is there a simple XLS file parser?

Is there a good way to parse data from an XLS (Legacy Excel) file other than installing a Java component and reading in files through a mapping?

 

The closest previous post I found was this one, but it is pretty old:

Qvera does not have any internal capabilities built in to parse XLS files, the route that was specified above would be the best path to use.
